DIY Custom Framing without the nails

DIY doesn’t always have to involve a flea market and if you live in a big city it’s pretty hard to get a deal off the mean streets of second hand mavens. Stores like TJ Maxx have super cheap frames perfect for a DIY, you just have to rip open the back to remove whatever poster of a banana it came with. This is my favorite place to find frames for oddly shaped or sized items like my 19th century Japanese print that belonged to my great-grandfather. A 4×10 piece of rice paper would cost a pretty penny to have framed but a plain plastic frame featuring an oblong yellow fruit was only $8. Then it was just a good sanding (this roughs up the plastic to give acrylic paint something to stick to, alternatively you could use glass paint) and a coat of cardinal red to make it my own!
